A British export but a welcome sound. This twelve part series was so well received in Great Britain that it was repeated three times on British radio. It was turned into a best-selling book, a record album and a London stage show. We in the colonies were treated to this highly amusing series in the early 1980s, usually airing over NPR. This is the story that begins on Earth,"an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea." Our hero is Arthur Dent, the only survivor when Earth was demolished to make way for an inter-galactic bypass, which, as it turned out, wasn't needed after all. He embarks on a ramble through the universe with an ordinary looking neighbor who, it turns out, comes from another planet and is a "roving researcher" for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

NOTE: Both the six hour and ninety minute variations of the Hitchhiker's Guide are available and in circulation. For any further information or questions about this series please feel free to contact dickjudge@juno.com.

The Caves Of Steel

Set in the distant future, New Yorkers live in small apartments without windows; hence the title "caves of steel". Detective Elijah Baley is sent on a murder investigation by Commissioner Julius Enderby.

In Spacetown live people from the Outer Worlds, known as "Spacers". Dr Sarton, a man who had plans to get earthmen to welcome robots among them, is murdered. Most earthmen are anti-robots and resent the spacers. The spacers are convinced that the murder was carried out by a New Yorker. If the crime becomes public knowledge, it could lead the spacers to declare war on earth.

Elijah must solve the murder discretely. The spacers require him to work with a partner who is a robot.

Lightoller - I Was There
Commander Lightoller (the most senior surviving officer aboard the Titanic) gives his version of events on the fateful night in April 1912. He lays great weight on the fact that a warning message about the amount of ice in the area was never delivered to the bridge, seeming to imply that if this news had been received, the accident could have been avoided.

A Rage in Dalston <> From:080419Alan Dein uncovers a little known story of postwar conflict. For four years after 1945, London and the South East witnessed vicious confrontations between the remnants of Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists and Jewish ex-servicemen organised in the 43 Group. Operating beyond the law, the latter were fueled by rage, guilt at the fate of Europe's Jews, and British policy in Palestine. Their goal was to drive fascism from the streets and silence its message forever.copied from a usenet group
